| Day 1-4 Beijing: |
Arrive in Beijing at any time before the group meeting in the evening. As group members will arrive at different times there are no arranged activities On Day 1 until our group meeting in the early evening. Please see the notice board in the hotel foyer for details of this meeting. On day 2, we are going to wander in Tiananmen square and find the real life of the old emperial family in the Forbidden City. On day 3, We are going to explore the Great Wall at Mutianyu. An incredible piece of engineering stretching almost 3000km westwards from the mountain ridges north of Beijing. It was originally constructed to protect the Chinese empires from the Mongolian 'barbarians' of the north. On day 4, Catch an afternoon train to Datong. |
|
| Day 5-7 Datong: |
On day 5, We are going to visit the Yungang Grottoes and Hanging monastery. Datong, the former capital of the Northern Wei Kingdom, is an ancient city with a history of more than 2,400 years. The city is endowed with rich cultural relics, such as Yungang Grottoes,Hanging Monastery, Wooden Pagoda, Nine Dragon Screen,1140AD Jin Dynasty Huayan Temple. On day 6,We are going to take a train to Pingyao. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Pingyao was a vibrant banking and trading centre. Ironically, there are now no banks in Pingyao. The city remains untouched as during the 1960s and '70s they did not have the funds to "revolutionise" the town. In 1999, UNESCO's World Cultural Relics Committee declared Pingyao a world heritage city. Vehicles are forbidden in the centre of town after nightfall. On day 7,You are free to wander around in Pingyao until we catch our overnight train to Xi'an in the evening. |
|
| Day 8-10 Xi'an: |
Xi'an was known as Chang,an in ancient times and was the capital for at least 11 Dynasties, covering a range of 1100 years. It was where Qin Shihuang(First Emperor) founded the Qin Danasty and unified all of China in 221BC. The lively Muslim Quarter is always full of activity and a great place for a sizzling kebab. Duck into the Great Mosque to take time out from the city bustle. Cycling the majestic Ming dynasty wall for great views over Xi'an is a great choice. On day 8, we are going to visit terra-cotta Warriors & Horses Museum. On day 9, your tour leader will show you the microcosm Chinese civilization---Shaanxi National History Museum. On day 10, free morning until we catch the afternoon train to Chengdu. It is good occasion for you to intermingle with the locals.
|
| Day 11-13 Chengdu: |
Chengdu is famed for it's spicy, oily food, and even if you request no oil or chilly, your food is still bound to make the mouth tingle. With many dishes you will notice a pleasant numbing of the tongue, this comes from the Sichuan peppercorns. Those who are weight conscious can rest assured that the Sichuan girls are also famed to be the skinniest in China, as apparently all the tea counteracts the oil. Chengdu hotpot is something that should be experienced, though its HOT!!! and anything and everything is eaten. Sichuan is also famous for its small snacks.Take time to visit the giant Panda research base or else just hang out in the city to drink tea, explore the temples and maybe get a relaxing massage. On day 11,We are going to have a close touch with the Chinese national treasure-Panda. On day 12, it is you free time to explore Chengdu, people's park is fasinating. On day 13, We are going to fly to Kunming.
|
| Day 14 Kunming: |
On day 14, Oorientation tour in kunming. Known as the "Spring City" and situated at 1900m above sea level, Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, meaning "South of the Clouds". There is a long history of what was once considered an isolated frontier. Various settlements of Chinese garrisons, minorities from along the Mekong river and people sent in exile have all made it a colourful place and far from the tight control of Beijing. In 1274 Kublai Khan's Mongol hordes took over. The modern city of Kunming has some excellent markets tucked away in the quaint backstreets. The Tang Dynasty pagodas are worth visiting, and there's a quiet spot tucked away in the gardens near the West Pagoda where people can meet to socialise and play mah jong. |
